Kernel panic – not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

This error occurred when I replaced my Centos hard disk. After rebooting the system, boot screen halted at that error. It also indicated that volume group cannot be found.

To resolve this issue, I rebuilt the initrd. Below are the steps.

  1. Insert Centos DVD and type linux resue in boot prompt.
  2. Follow screen instruction until entering command line mode.
  3. Type chroot /mnt/sysimage to cd to the actual system.
  4. Backup initrd-<kernel version>.img before rebuild.
  5. Rebuild initrd: mkinitrd /boot/initrd-<kernel version>.img <kernel version>
  6. Eject Centos DVD and reboot.

Done.
