Notepad++ missing from context menu

This happens a few times and to restore it to the context menu, just create a new entry in Registry.

  1. Type ‘regedit’ in run prompt
  2. Create a new key ‘Edit with Notepad++’ under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shell/
  3. Create a new key ‘command’ under ‘Edit with Notepad++’
  4. Edit the default value in the right pane and set the Data to the path where Notepad++ executable is.

Update on Aug 25 2013: To add an icon to the context menu,

  1. Click the ‘Edit with Notepad++’ key you have created
  2. Right click in the right pane and select  New->’Expandable String Value’
  3. set the name as ‘Icon’ and set the Data to the path where Notepad++ executable is.

    Thanks a lot. This is really helpful. I was getting an icon beside the Edit with Notepad++ menu in Windows 7. Menu was missing in Windows 8. Your steps help me get back the menu. Any thought how to get back the icon as well. Not important though. Just asking. Thanks again.

    Icon problem make sure your not in “command” and in “Edit with Notepad++” or whatever your primary file is

    Had the same problem. You don’t need “Expandable String Value”, just “String value” will do 🙂
